Trinidad and Tobago- A Caribbean Escape

As winter days turn gray and monotonous, there’s no better time to escape a few hours south to the sun-soaked Caribbean. A trip to Trinidad and Tobago is the perfect way to start the new year, trading icy roads packed with traffic for turquoise waters and sandy beaches. This twin-island nation offers a blend of relaxation and adventure, making it an intrepid yet relaxing destination. While Trinidad brings a vibrant energy and wide variety of waterfalls and adventures, Tobago’s tranquil charm makes it a beautiful retreat to unwind and relax. Tobago offers a slower pace of life compared to many other Caribbean destinations. It’s not overly commercialized, making it perfect for those who want to slow things down a bit!

Tobago is known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush rainforests. The Blue Waters Inn, nestled in the quaint Speyside area, provides the perfect base for exploring Tobago’s untouched natural beauty. Whether snorkeling or diving in the warm shallow waters around the ‘Ian Fleming’ Goat Island or hiking through the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the world’s oldest protected rainforest, Tobago is an unspoiled paradise. Its safety, cleanliness, and friendly locals create an inviting atmosphere for all visitors!

Where to Stay

The Blue Waters Inn is an eco-friendly, family owned boutique hotel that offers stunning ocean views, luxurious accommodations, and everything you need for an unforgettable escape. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or for a girls trip, this is a dream destination you’ve been searching for.

I stayed in Bungalow 9- the epitome of laid-back luxury. The space boasts an open-plan living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and spacious bedrooms, but my favorite part was absolutely the private veranda overlooking the turquoise waters. You can’t get any closer to an oceanfront property with the private staircase entrance leading directly into the water.

Here are five activities to enjoy on the private grounds:

Snorkeling and Diving

Tobago is renowned for its coral reefs, and Blue Waters Inn has an on-site dive shop. A short boat ride will take you to sites like Angel Reef or the Japanese Gardens. Snorkeling in Batteaux Bay is equally rewarding, with colorful fish and sea turtles frequently making an appearance.

Hike to Little Tobago Island

Arrange a boat tour to Little Tobago, a nearby uninhabited island and bird sanctuary. The hike to the top is short but rewarding, offering panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding islands.

Dining at Aqua Restaurant

The on-site restaurant, Aqua, is a must. Their seafood is as fresh as it gets and you get to enjoy your meals with uninterrupted views of the bay. Start your day with Choka, a smoky, roasted vegetable dish served with sada roti or swordfish. Freshly caught seafood is a staple, with dishes like grilled snapper, curried crab, and lobster!

Sunset Kayaking

Complimentary kayaks are available for guests. Paddle out in the late afternoon to catch the stunning sunset from the water.

Relax by the Infinity Pool

Overlooking the bay, the infinity pool is a peaceful oasis. Whether you’re taking a dip or lounging poolside with a book or casually sipping a freshly made cocktail, this is where you’ll feel all your stress melt away.

The rich culture is shaped by a blend of influences from Africa, India, Europe, and the Americas. January offers a sneak peek into the carnival season—an explosion of color, music, and life that will goes in early March. In Trinidad check out the pre-carnival fêtes and steelpan performances or visit Tobago’s cultural scene which offers a quieter yet equally engaging vibe including folk dances, drumming, and storytelling.

In Trinidad, Maracas Bay is top of the list! Winding through the lush Northern Range, you’ll encounter incredible viewpoints like the Maracas Lookout, where you can snap photos of the crescent-shaped bay below. The vibe at Maracas is vibrant, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the sun, sand, and surf.

If you’re up for something active, stroll along the shore to explore or join a game of beach soccer. For a more laid-back vibe, find a shady spot under a palm tree to read a book and soak in the beauty.

No trip to Maracas Bay is complete without tasting Trinidad’s most iconic street food: bake and shark. Richard’s Bake and Shark is the standout vendor among the many lining the beach, and for good reason.

Here’s the magic: a crispy yet tender fillet of shark is sandwiched between freshly fried “bake” (a soft, golden flatbread). The real fun begins at the toppings bar, where you can customize your sandwich with an array of sauces, veggies, and condiments. From spicy tamarind and garlic sauce to tangy shadow beni (cilantro) chutney, the flavor combinations are endless. If shark isn’t your thing, there are often alternatives like fish or even vegetarian options. So, pack your beach bag and your appetite- you won’t want to miss this piece of paradise.

Know before you go:

• Currency: Tobago uses the Trinidad and Tobago Dollar (TTD), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted. It’s helpful to carry small bills for tips and local vendors.

• Electricity: The island uses 115V, and the outlets are the same as in the U.S., so no need to bring adapters.

• Packing: Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes, and lightweight clothing. The island vibe is casual, so no need for fancy attire unless you’re planning a special dinner out.
